Innovating a Genre: What is “New Adult Self-Help Fiction”?

When I was a kid, reading was really the only way I was able to stay sane.

Well, reading, and writing.

Reading offers a much needed escape for a lot of people. And when I was doing through my darkest era, I consumed books like they were candy.

Then, I grew up, began healing from my trauma, and realized that I could help people by writing fiction.

“New Adult Self Help Fiction” is how I brand most of my writing. It is fiction with the intention of encouraging personal growth by talking about things like trauma, and flashbacks.

Flashbacks & Afterglow was the first book that I wrote with self-help in mind, and #SelfishSunday followed.

Flashbacks & Afterglow is a story about a lot of things. It’s a story about a sorority house that is willing to do anything, even murder, just to be able to go out and party.  But it is also a story about “Snow White” coming to terms with her childhood trauma. And I’m really proud of how the whole thing turned out.

You see, a “traumatic” event is an event where you believe that your life, or someone else’s life, is legitimately in danger.

That being said, Snow White would definitely have trauma. Her mother was competitively jealous of her and tried to murder her.

So, New Adult Self Help fiction is my way of giving back to the world and discussing trauma in a way that is easy to understand. Because sometimes accessing stories about what other people went through is the best way to address what YOU have been going through

And you deserve to be well, Sweetheart.

E.
